Automatically shipped by LoudTwitterWhat we didn't know was that the shoes squeak when little toddler feet are in them.
They are now Alex's favorite shoes. He will even pick them up and bring them to us to put on his feet so he can squeak around. I think it's cute. I think it gets on my FIL's and MIL's nerves :)
The last few days are sort of blurry. My family arrived yesterday and I tried so hard to be a good hostess, but that anesthesia really kicked my butt and I've spent a lot of time napping. I had wobbly legs and headaches, and I couldn't breathe through my nose. Doing much better now, however. I'm still getting some headaches, but I'm actually able to stay awake for 3-4 hours at a time before needing a nap.
Hope everyone (US side) had a great 4th of July!
Introducing the new Bio-Optic Organized Knowledge device, trade named:BOOK. BOOK is a revolutionary breakthrough in technology: no wires, no electric circuits, and no batteries, nothing to be connected or switched on. It's so easy to use, even a child can operate it. Compact and portable, it can be used anywhere even sitting in an armchair by the fire yet it is powerful enough to hold as much information as a CD-ROM disc. Here's how it works: BOOK is constructed of sequentially numbered sheets of paper (recyclable), each capable of holding thousands of bits of information. The pages are locked together with a custom-fit device called a binder, which keeps the sheets in their correct sequence. Unlike other display devices, BOOK never crashes or requires rebooting, and it can even be dropped on the floor or stepped on without damage. However, it can become unusable if immersed in water for a significant period of time.

Automatically shipped by LoudTwitterYes, they were in your yard (at least that's where they started out) and there were people with them.
However...
There are other people in the neighborhood (like me) who enjoy walking their own dogs (as I do) and those dogs are just this side of puppy and are still learning their manners (hence the walking, on a leash, with a very short lead for control even).
All of the above is not license to allow your very small, very cute, and obviously very untrained puppy to go charging at my (much larger) puppy. See, my (much larger) puppy sees it as an invitation to play, which results in my having to hold her back while your obviously very untrained puppy goes tearing around your yard and neighbors' yards and the (thankfully quiet) street, in frenzied exuberance. Now if you were familiar with my puppy, I might let her have a longer lead and allow to her play, as she so desperately wants to, because she is the friendliest soul on the planet and hasn't ever met a doggie or human she doesn't want to play with. However, since you're not familiar with my puppy, all you see is seventy pounds of large black dog desperately wanting to get at your (obviously untrained, since she ignores your calls and seems to think that your running towards her is some new! fun! game! that gives her permission to run ever further afield) puppy.
Thankfully, I am a rather strong individual (plus, short leash and walking harness and all that) and I've been working on my puppy's manners, so after the initial burst of excitement, she heeded the command to sit and waited patiently as you chased your small (and yes, very cute and I'd hate to see anything happen to her) puppy across three yards and the street, I'm sure hoping the entire time, that a car wouldn't round the bend.
Just a word of advice—if she's that bad about listening, keep her on a lead when you're in an unfenced front yard where any manner of cars, people, and yes, other large dogs might be passing by. Just because she's small, doesn't mean you shouldn't take the same responsibilities that those of us with large black dogs do. In the end, it makes everyone's life so much more pleasant.
No love,
Me.

Automatically shipped by LoudTwitterWell, i've read 2 books and I'm halfway through a third, so I bought TWO books today. Oh no, what a tragedy. Except that for the next 2-3 days I will not be able to wear glasses and so will not be able to read.
I LOSE.
In my possession I now have the new Joanna Bourne, The Spymaster and the Lady. I adored her last book so much (I still need to send that to you, bookchick), so decided to buy this one new. Then I was on my way out and got caught by Jessica Anderson's Nightkeepers. The cover, and the endorsement by Ward is what caught my attention. Blurb isn't half bad, so I made an impulsive purchase. I'll likely be disappointed, but hey... I sometimes like to try new things. I can learn, right?
Many others that I saw I'd like to have, but I'm holding off. A few can wait until they're used, and a few can wait until I've made more of a dent in my TBR. And it's not like I don't have a huge stack of borrowed books I need to get to. But I *think* most people know that when they loan me books it disappears in my house for a while before I read them and return them.
I bought my mom's birthday present today - her first real Coach purse. My brother and I split the cost of the one I got her. It's cute and I think she'll like it. If not, she can exchange it for one she likes more.
I am missing my little boy right now :( He's staying with grandma tonight so that we don't have to manage him at 4:30 a.m. when we get up to go to the hospital. Then he's coming home for a little bit in the afternoon, then going to his grandpa's overnight. Two nights without my little man. It makes me sad, but at the same time, I think it's a good idea for him to be away while I'm in drug-induced grogginess and the husband is getting the house ready for my family's arrival Friday.
Wish me luck tomorrow! Hopefully there are no bad reactions to the anesthesia and the doctor doesn't slice my nose off or anything!
It's an odd exercise for me. I was born in NYC and have lived in several places, not all of them what I would consider to be hometowns. So I'll post pictures of the ones that I claim.
First, my original hometown: ( North Miami, FL )
So, next on our tour is my current hometown, ( Jacksonville, FL )
So, where did I leave my heart? (Well, a piece of mine is always going to be in the Bay Area, but I never technically lived there-- cursed bad timing and all that). But the place that has felt most like home outside of Miami is, oddly enough, Hudson, OH. (Caro's hometown in Accent was completely based on Hudson.) Nifty town about halfway between Cleveland and Akron with more a New England vibe than a Midwest one, because of its origins as part of the original Connecticut Western Reserve. It's so picturesque, it almost doesn't feel real, but it still had an air of quirkiness that gave it a bit of a Northern Exposure sort of vibe. For me, it was about the most perfect place I've ever lived that didn't have palm trees and the scent of salt on the air.
Main Street. (Yes, it's really called Main Street.)
( More Hudson )
One road home...
And another...

Automatically shipped by LoudTwitterIt was extremely snowy at Crater Lake. The visitor's center weather report said there was an average of 15" of snow on the ground today, 170% of normal for the day. So, regretfully there was little hiking. And no boat tours of the lake.
East Rim Drive was closed, as CJ demonstrates just how high the snow banks were at the turn off. Much more than 15".
West Rim Drive was open, and the view points yielded spectacular pictures of the lake, which were made better by the total lack of wind.
We did not let the lack of open hiking trails deter us. We just tromped through the snow and into the woods. Yes, there were occaisional snowball skirmishes.
Young trees do not do well in snowy conditions. Horizontal trees were a very common sight.
We did encounter this great sign. A demonstration of the National Parks Service trying to avoid lawsuits.
We explored the lower elevations where Annie's Creek had cut this gorge. This sides appear to be made out of ultra-soft, compressed volcanic ash. Would this be ignious or sedimentary rock?
After roaming around all of the park that was open, we returned to sit on the veranda and enjoy the peace and quiet (and our respective books). It was easy to find a space, as most folks collected inside. The dining room had a rough night. The risotto garnish that accompanied both my and CJ's dinners tasted like wallpaper paste. Since CJ is not used to a lot of physical activity, we again retired early.
The cousins got a chance to chat, showing off the princess motif of the party theme.

The siblings enjoyed each others company. Frank was pulled into grill master service and did an excellent job with the burgers and dogs.

The great grandfather, Gordon and sidekick, Mele made it to the party. Gordon was seen in deep conversation with the county supervisor that attended. The mayor of Santa Cruz was also there.

All three grandmothers were present, Karen, Arley and Gina.

Simon gave a lovely speech, Micol pretended to blow out the candles(it was too windy to light them). We all enjoyed the chocolate whipped cream cake from the Buttery !!

There were lots of children running about, good conversation and a bouncy house. I was excited to try the slide once most of the wee folk had left.
Thanks to Great Bird for these photos !!
